Arthritis And The Use Of CBD For Pain

Can CBD help with ordinary wear-and-tear arthritis?

Arthritis can be attributed to a variety of mechanisms, but two most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Both of these substrates of arthritis are characterized by inflammation in one or more joins with symptoms of stiffness. Many of my patients deal with chronic pain just from wear-and-tear arthritis,  which is osteoarthritis. Just a breakdown of joints that have been used over the lifetime, in the hips and lower back, or in the wrists and hands. So it’s so exciting to find not only great human data, but also great data in a mouse model.

CBD and Arthritis Research

In 2000, a study called The nonpsychoactive cannabis constituent cannabidiol is an oral anti-arthritic therapeutic in murine collagen-induced arthritis was performed where arthritic mice were treated with CBD. They found that the mice treated with CBD saw decreased joint swelling in the arthritic joints. In addition, the synovium, the lining of the joints, was found to be broken down less quickly. Also, those inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor and interleukin, that contribute to inflammation but also promote pain, the production of those cytokines is drastically decreased.

The mice do better. They get around the cage better, they move more easily. So it’s not only just a matter of all of these markers biochemically. Actually, the individual mice feel better. The other amazing thing that has been done with CB receptors is blocking them in the mouse model. When we block those receptors and don’t let any cannabinoids impact the mouse, their arthritis gets significantly worse.

So you have excellent mouse data, and you also have some excellent human data in pain. I hope you get a chance to review all of these great videos, and think about how CBD and cannabis could be positioned to help you with your painful arthritis syndrome.
