Habitual Cannabis Use May Lower Your Sperm Count
Can regular use of cannabis make it hard to have a baby?
Cannabis may lower sperm counts and decrease sperm motility.
Research into Cannabis and Sperm Count
A recent study was recently performed at the University of Copenhagen on 1,215 young men. This survey asked participants if they were using cannabis or any other substances. Men who said that they were using cannabis once a week or more experienced a reduction in sperm count by 29%, but also a similar reduction in sperm motility. Unfortunately the results were even more dire in regards to men who were using other substances like cocaine or ecstasy. These rates showed a 55% decrease in sperm count, and a 55% decrease in sperm quality. These are impressive numbers and even though the researchers tried to eliminate alcohol and cigarette smoking, they still found this variable to exist.
There’s also the problem of an unhealthy lifestyle. Researchers were unable to effectively factor out those who may not have healthy diets, get adequate sleep or the exercise infrequently. These factors in essential for healthy sperm. If you’re wanting to have a baby or struggle with issues surrounding infertility, reach out to your infertility doctor about your use of cannabis.
